How Bad the Fluoride Can Be For Your Dental Health

Fluoride is a natural mineral which is known for strengthening your teeth and prevent cavities. This is the reason that fluoride is added as a main ingredient in the community water since 1970s. However, there is a controversy over the safety of fluoride. It raises the question if fluoride is a safe ingredient for oral and overall health.

The fluoride controversy

Grand Rapids, Michigan was the first area to have fluoridated water supplied to the communities. Fluoride was added in 1945. Soon afterwards, other areas of US and Canada followed the suit when they observed the benefits.

However, this addition of fluoride has been controversial. According to many, this way of supplying fluoride to the public is an expensive practice. But American Dental Association (ADA) states that lifetime cost of fluoride for an average person is not greater than that of a dental filling. Nevertheless, many people believe that government doesn’t need to have any role in the oral health of any person. Moreover, there is another controversy regarding the health risks of fluoride.

Proof that fluoride is safer

Despite what many people say, fluoride has not been found to have any health risk for the consumers. There are scientific evidences which deny the link between fluoride and the oral and overall health conditions. As a matter of fact, the fluoride consistently proves to be the contributor in building oral and overall health of people in general. Studies suggest that the amount of fluoride contained by the toothpaste and tap water actually has the health benefits. Having that said, fluoride has been scientifically found to have no links with the health conditions mentioned below.

  • Cancer
  • Allergies
  • Alzheimer disease
  • Heart disease
  • Down syndrome
  • Osteoporosis
  • Low intelligence
  • Kidney infections

Many organizations such as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American Dental Association (ADA) and World Health Organization (WHO) maintain that fluoride is actually a safer ingredient for the oral and overall health.

Although fluoride is safe for the oral and overall health, one should not forget that too much of a good thing can turn out to the damaging. Same goes for the fluoride as well. Fluorosis is a dental health condition which involves occurrence of white and yellow spots on the surface of teeth. However, this condition is nothing more than cosmetic disorder which usually appears in the children and, occasionally, in adults due to fluoride overuse.

The reason this condition is common in children is that children usually do not have enough knowledge about brushing their teeth. They may learn about brushing but they do not spit the toothpaste out after brushing. The fluoride in swallowed toothpaste gets absorbed by the body and then supplied to the teeth which are already exposed to enough amount of fluoride through other external means.

Having that said, it gets important to get help from dentists regarding the use of fluoride. Dentists can tell you about the right use of fluoride. Moreover, you can get fluoride treatment from your dentist if you have fluoride deficiency.
